Tech?Update!: SEH UTN Manager with Windows Service "SEH UTN Service"

Date: 03-03-2010 | Archive: 04-26-2010 | カテゴリー: Tech?Update!

The new SEH UTN-Manager 1.2.x comes in two versions:

  • Single-User Version (SEH UTN Manager)
  • Multi-User Version (SEH UTN Manager and SEH UTN Service)

The most important difference between these two versions of the SEH UTN Managers is the new Windows service SEH UTN-Service integrated into the Multi-User version. This service is started automatically when the operating system boots and operates in the background. Users access the SEH UTN Service via the common Windows administration methods.

The SEH UTN Service enables up to four users to simultaneously access USB devices attached via myUTN USB device servers. This turns the Multi-User version into a perfect tool for sharing USB devices. SEH UTN Service enables the allocation of user group permissions for two types of user groups with different sets of rights for each.

Differentiating User Groups and Allocating Rights
The Multi-User version differentiates between the following user groups:

  • Windows Admin: User with administrative rights
  • Windows User: User without administrative rights

Different rights are allocated to these user groups when utilizing the SEH UTN Manager. This includes the function "device access control" which is available only for the Multi-User version. This function controls the user group Windows Users' access to the USB devices attached via myUTN. The function "Print-on-Demand", too, is only available for the user group Windows Admin. The following table offers you a survey of the allocation of rights for the user groups of the SEH UTN Manager Multi-User version:

Access Control of USB Devices via SEH UTN Manager

The function "device access control" enables users of the Multi-User version to control access to the USB devices attached via myUTN USB device servers. When these USB devices are first attached to a myUTN USB device server they appear in the select list and can be accessed from all users. Users with administrative rights (Windows Admin) have unconfined access to the attached USB devices. Utilizing "device access control", they can also block the complete access of the user group Windows User. As a consequence, these can no longer activate the connection between client (PC, notebook) and the USB device. After blocking the Windows User group, the Windows Admins can then set up access to specific USB devices for the user group Windows Users.
